A coastal wellness experience inspired by the healing power of water
Independent UK luxury hotel group Harbour Hotels has launched the Blue Mind Retreat, a coastal wellness concept inspired by the restorative power of water. Rolling out across its seaside destinations, the retreat combines immersive spa rituals, nourishing cuisine and time spent by the coast to promote calm, reduce stress and support overall wellbeing.
The Blue Mind philosophy draws on research into “blue spaces” – natural environments shaped by water – which has been shown to contribute to improved mental health and emotional wellbeing. A systematic review concluded that time spent in blue space environments is associated with improved psychological wellbeing and stress recovery (Britton et al., 2020).
At the centre of the experience is the Blue Mind Spa Ritual, a 90-minute sensory treatment designed to mirror the body’s instinctive response to water. The ritual begins with a full-body exfoliation to stimulate circulation, followed by a skin-boosting facial that encourages cellular renewal. A tailored massage completes the journey using alternating elements of heat and cold to awaken the senses, ease muscle tension and enhance recovery.
“We are delighted to launch this exclusive Blue Mind treatment for Harbour Hotels. We wanted to create a truly unique treatment that celebrates the beautiful blue locations of Harbour Hotels and the restorative benefits of being near the water. This Mediterranean-inspired treatment is designed to leave you looking and feeling that ‘fresh out of the blue’ sparkle,” said Gemma Dobson, Senior Spa Business Manager at TempleSpa.
For those keen to deepen the experience, Harbour Hotels has introduced a self-guided coastal contrast therapy protocol, created by the spa team. Designed for guests confident with cold-water immersion, it offers clear step-by-step guidance on transitioning safely between sauna heat and sea immersion, with recommended timings, breathing cues and recovery phases to stimulate circulation and support recovery.
Beyond the spa, the retreat encourages guests to embrace the natural rhythm of the coastline. From cliffside walks in the West Country to sea-air strolls along Dorset’s shoreline, sunrise views over Sussex promenades and invigorating wild swims, the retreat encourages a slower pace and deeper connection with the surrounding environment. Time spent by water works in harmony with the spa ritual to guide the body into its natural ‘rest and repair’ state, helping guests unwind more fully, sleep better and return home feeling calmer and more resilient.
“Water has an instinctive calming effect on the body,” said Siobhan Coston, Group Spa Manager at Harbour Hotels. “The Blue Mind Ritual mirrors that natural rhythm through touch, temperature and texture. It’s a deeply sensory experience that allows guests to switch off, release tension and reconnect with themselves.”
Blue Mind Retreats are now available to book across participating coastal properties: Brighton, Christchurch, Sidmouth, Salcombe, Beach Club and St Ives.
The Blue Mind Retreat starts from £395 per room based on two adults sharing. The package includes a continental breakfast and choice of cooked breakfast; a three-course dinner from a seasonal set menu; a revitalising 90-minute Blue Mind Ritual for each adult; and full access to the HarSPA or Beach Club Spa facilities.
